Sliding-Scale Therapy & Affordable Counseling
A sliding-scale fee adjusts the cost of therapy based on what you can afford. FQHCs are required to offer sliding scales (often $0–$25/session). University training clinics typically charge $20–$60/session for sessions with supervised graduate-student therapists. Open Path Collective is a national network of therapists who agree to charge $30–$80/session.
Search 'Mental Health' or 'Community Health Clinics' in your state to find sliding-scale providers near you.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I ask about a sliding scale?
- When calling a clinic or therapist, ask: 'Do you offer a sliding-scale fee based on income?' If yes, they'll usually ask for proof of income (pay stubs, tax return) to determine your fee. There's no shame in asking — most clinics expect it.
- Are training clinics any good?
- Yes. Training clinics are run by university psychology, counseling, and social work programs. Therapists are advanced graduate students supervised closely by experienced licensed clinicians. Sessions tend to be longer (45–60 min) and more careful than in busy private practices.
